Situated a few miles inland from the breathtaking Jurassic Coast, lies the small ancient market town of Axminster. Renowned for producing the famous top-quality Axminster Carpets created by Thomas Whitty in 1755, the town is also well known as the home of the River Cottage Local Produce Store and Canteen. Offering a wide selection of the best produce locally sourced by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and his team, Axminster holds regular markets also serving up delicious local delicacies.
The East Devon Way footpath and Buzzard Route cycle track are great trails to explore and run close to the town. A stroll around Axminster itself will present interesting and charming streets to explore. Browse independent shops, boutiques and grab a bite in one of the great local eateries washed down with a good Devon homebrew. The town also has the Axminster Art Trail which is an interesting walk where you can admire sculptures and models representing areas of the town’s heritage. The town is built on a hill and overlooks the River Axe, where the mudflats are great for birdwatching.
To keep the kids amused, there are various attractions to entertain. The Axe Valley Wildlife Park is a unique park home to Meerkats, Lemurs and Zebras. An outdoor play area and a coffee shop can also be found in the park. For a history lesson about this market town, you’ve got to head to the Axminster Museum. With free entry, discover collections ranging from tools, carpets, photographs from the past, and archaeology. Burrow Farm Gardens are great for a relaxing day out. Wander through ten acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and treat yourself to a traditional Devon cream tea. Make sure you do it the proper ‘Devon’ way and top the fresh scone with cream first!
A short drive away is the larger coastal town of Lyme Regis. Pack up the buckets and spades and hit the beach at this typical seaside resort. The Cobb is the perfect place to cast your lines for a spot of crab fishing or just a relaxed saunter accompanied by a delicious ice cream. Lyme Regis is also home to a marine aquarium and mini golf course.
