Located as its name suggests at the mouth of the River Dart, Dartmouth has a long association with the sea and the Royal Navy- and back in the tenth century was even chosen as a point of departure for the Crusades.
It merits a mention in Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ too and although well fortified with castles on either side of the river mouth, the port was sacked a couple of times during the Hundred Years’ War - after which the powers-that-be woke up and blocked the mouth at night with a massive chain.
