Close to the southern borders of Exmoor and not far from the main A39 link road between the M5 motorway and Barnstaple lies the small rural market town of South Molton. Situated on the banks of the River Mole the town featured in the Civil War incident involving the capture of Sir John Penruddock in 1655.
