South Devon certainly isn't short of beautiful places to stay and with so many things to do and see, it is the perfect destination for a summer holiday. Here are our top family days out in South Devon.
Woodlands Leisure Park
Woodlands guarantees a full day of fun, not just for the children, but for you as well! With so many things to see and do, your little ones won't know where to begin. Do they head for the zoo-farm first to meet the baby animals? Or do they need to burn off some energy in one of the super-exciting indoor play areas? For the thrill-seekers among you, head to the Cyclone Zone and jump straight on one of the water rides or whizz down the zip wires.
National Marine Aquarium
This is a good one for that slightly overcast day, when the kids are moaning because they can't play on the beach and you need something just as exciting to do. As the UK's largest aquarium, it is a must-see attraction in its own right, housing hundreds of different species from local waters across to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia! Discover the beautiful and vibrant underwater world, with informative talks throughout the day. It promises both an exciting and educational day out!
You'll want to make sure that the little ones have an early night before a day at Pennywell Farm. Meet the farm animals, cuddle a miniature pig, explore the Willow Maze and Pennywell Pond, enjoy a pony ride and listen for the bell that chimes each hour signalling for the start of the next show or display. You can also try out the Red Rocket, Tractor and Trailer ride and your day won't be complete without meeting Boxer, the resident Shire Horse, don't let his size put you off, he's a friendly giant.
When the sun is shining and the children need to burn off some energy, the National Trust's Lydford Gorge is the perfect choice. The spectacular 30m White Lady Waterfall is the deepest gorge in the South West and Devil's Cauldron is a giant pothole that has been created by the force of the water where the river narrows. The woodlands are a haven for wildlife and during the summer months they become alive with beautiful and colourful wildflowers and various paths offering great walks crisscross one another. This is a great day out where you can all enjoy the fresh air and the great outdoors, pack a picnic and take some time to relax or you could grab a traditional Devon cream tea in one of the two tea rooms.
