Nestled on the corner of Dartmoor National Park in South Devon, Okehampton is a town of many landscapes. Surrounded by rugged moorland, ancient stone circles and prehistoric settlements, Okehampton boasts beautiful country scenery mixed with an urban town setting. With so much on its doorstep Okehampton holidays are perfect for groups and families with different tastes and hobbies.
Dartmoor National Park is over 360 square miles of moor, walking tracks, tors and wildlife. It is the largest area of open countryside in the South of England and Okehampton lies at its heart. With many guided walks across the moors each day and special events taking place in Okehampton and neighbouring towns and villages throughout the year, Dartmoor is a thriving hub of things to do.
You can hire guides to walk you across the moor, taking in some of the more ancestral facts as you walk, or for a more ‘spontaneous’ walk grab an OS map and head for the hills. With so much open moorland to explore and all being a stone’s throw from Okehampton centre you won’t need anything other than a compass and a good pair of walking boots.
When travelling into Okehampton as you are surrounded by moorland, surprisingly, as you get into the centre of town the mix of urban and rural starts to emerge. With houses, shops, restaurants, cafés, pubs and supermarkets lining the streets you will start to realise all that Okehampton has to offer. The buildings themselves showcase some of the history that the town has to offer with architectural features unspoilt over the years, traditional countryside all around, as well as the highest peaks of Dartmoor, from Yes Tor, towering in the background above Okehampton.
With only a few high-street stores like Waitrose and Boots in the town, the majority of stores in the main street in Okehampton are smaller family run businesses, meaning there is a bespoke shopping experience to be had. With only introducing a few high-street stores into the mix, you get a feeling of complete seclusion from the rest of the world; and yet only 30 minutes drive away you have the bustling City of Exeter.
