The small seaside Devon town of Seaton sits on the Jurassic Coast and is a great location for exploring the famous World Heritage Site. Welcoming thousands of visitors each year, a holiday in Seaton offers beautiful coastlines, traditional seaside fun, coastal walks, exhilarating water sports, and much more. A superb setting for visiting spots such as the River Axe wetlands, fantastic for keen birdwatchers, or exploring Axmouth harbour, where you can watch local fishing boats bringing in their daily catch. Seaton holidays place you in the perfect destination to get out and explore all East Devon has to offer.
Seaton was an important port for several centuries, and supplied sailors and ships during the time of Edward I’s war against Scotland and France. However when the railway was introduced, use of the port slowed down. Seaton is also home to Axmouth Bridge which still stands today. Built in 1877 the bridge is the oldest surviving concrete bridge in England. Neighbouring the bridge is also the country’s oldest concrete building, The Old Tollhouse. You can learn more about the history of Seaton by taking a trip to Seaton Museum where a wealth of knowledge on the towns past can be unearthed.
The historic Seaton Tramway is also a delight to jump aboard. Narrow gauge heritage trams span 3 miles of unspoilt countryside along the beautiful Axe Valley. Hop on at Seaton and stop off at the picturesque village of Colyford, and pretty medieval town of Colyton for a perfect day out admiring hidden gems of East Devon. If you really feel like getting in the spirit, you can also book experiences such as tram driving lessons, or take the kids on special themed trips such as the Dinosaur Train or the Halloween special, Tram of Terrors! Other excellent attractions for all the family to enjoy include Seaton beach, a large beach great for sailing, surfing, and shore fishing, complete with great paddling points for the younger children, or Seaton Marshes Nature Reserve, great for wildlife watching and interesting walks. After a day out, make sure to treat yourselves to a Devon fish and chip dinner by the shore.
