Why everyone should visit Dawlish

Dawlish is truly a jewel in South Devon's crown. The beautiful seaside resort and nearby Dawlish Warren, a first-class beach and nature reserve, are perfect places to spend some time away, with plenty to do for groups of friends, families and couples.

It's just a short jaunt from either Exeter or Plymouth, should you wish to venture further out into a city, while it lies in the mouth of the River Exe Estuary, meaning you're just a boat trip away from the gorgeous town of Exmouth.

Holidays in this lovely part of South Devon will have you perfectly placed to explore the south coast or beautiful rural parts such as Dartmoor – but you might not want to leave the town once you see how beautiful it is!

What’s in Dawlish?

It's one of the most beautiful parts of Devon, home to a Nature Reserve and a Blue Flag beach.

Visited by thousands of people each year, Dawlish Warren is one of the most important places for wildfowl and wading birds in the whole of the South West, and thousands of birds feed, migrate or even spend the whole winter here! The Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve is a 500-acre area of grassland, sand dunes and mudflats, centred on a one-and-a-half mile long sandspit/beach across the mouth of the Exe Estuary. It's so important to the UK, it has been named a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The long beach is backed by sand dunes and has achieved Blue Flag status for the last few years. This means that it's a beach that takes pride in its cleanliness and has a superb quality of bathing water – perfect for taking a dip or a day trip! It was even in the Top 12 UK beaches for 2016!

The beach at Dawlish Warren prides itself on being a family resort, with entertainment, pubs and restaurants all within a stone's throw of the sand. In 2017, a total of £17m was accrued to be spent on improving the beach and its surroundings; mainly to help reduce the risk of flooding to over 2,900 properties around the River Exe.

Where should I stay?

There are plenty of holiday parks in the area, ideal for groups of friends, families and couples. On-site entertainment, swimming pools and restaurants will all be at your disposal, while they’re all situated within easy walking distance of the beach and nature reserve.

If there’s a big group of you, you’ll also be able to make sure you can stay together, with some parks offering accommodation which sleeps large groups and some which allow dogs!
