A local’s guide to Combe Martin

Combe Martin, nestled on the North Devon coast on the edge of Exmoor, is one of Devon’s hidden gems. Often overlooked by holidaymakers heading for the beach resorts of Croyde and Woolacombe, the village has retained its rural charm and friendly atmosphere. Holidays here range from relaxing romantic retreats to active family breaks - and our local's guide explains all about the lovely location.

15 hidden North Devon beaches

North Devon’s coast showcases striking scenery from towering cliffs to broad swathes of golden sand. Surfers and holidaymakers flock to the popular beaches of Croyde, Woolacombe and Westward Ho!, but peppered between these well-known destinations are some secret gems waiting to be discovered. We reveal the beaches where you can escape the crowds and soak up the scenery in sublime serenity.

A coastal village

Combe Martin is situated right on the fringe of Exmoor National Park, one of the most beautiful areas of the country. With Lynton and Lynmouth to the west and Woolacombe and Ilfracombe to the east, the village is the perfect base for exploring the incredible surroundings.

The village’s peaceful cove has towering hills either side offering amazing views across the bay. At low tide, you can head around the coast to a usually inaccessible and secluded golden beach, while, just along the South West Coast Path, you’ll find Great Hangman, England's highest sea cliff.

Just outside the village is Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, home to animatronic dinosaurs and a whole host of exotic animals, while halfway along the high street is the Pack o’Cards Inn. Built in 1626, it was built to resemble a pack of cards.
