Top five things to do in Plymouth

Head to the south coast to enjoy the sights of one of Devon's larger cities, Plymouth. There's plenty of interesting areas to visit which will keep the whole family entertained so we decided to create a list of fantastic things to do in Plymouth.

1. Head to the Hoe

Plymouth Hoe is home to the iconic Smeaton's Tower lighthouse, Art Deco Tinside Lido and is the perfect spot to enjoy a picnic and take in gorgeous coastal views. The Royal Citadel is a dramatic 17th-century fortress, which is open for guided tours too, provides an insight into past military operations and is still in use today.

2. Enjoy the Barbican

The historic Barbican area is where you can find some of Plymouth's oldest buildings and ancient sites. An abundance of restaurants can be found here serving a mixture of delicacies from across the world and the quaint cobbled streets are a delight to explore around the Barbican. There are independent shops, galleries and boutiques dotted through the narrow lanes; perfectly picturesque and great for picking up unique gifts.

3. Explore Royal William Yard

Oozing charm and rich in history, Royal William Yard is an interesting group of Grade 1 listed military buildings and a lovely area to discover. Home to many outdoor theatre productions, open-air cinema showings and arts and crafts events, the yard has lots of unique public events throughout the year and art galleries showcasing interesting exhibitions. Unwind on the welcoming lawn with beautiful sea views in the summer months.

4. Shop till you drop in the City Centre

Offering a fantastic shopping experience, the city centre of Plymouth has all your favourite high street shops as well as an extensive range of independent and specialist retailers. There are markets to pick up local wares and as you explore the centre keep an eye out for the impressive examples of post-war architecture.

5. Keep the kids entertained with great local attractions

If you want to keep the little ones entertained, there are plenty of things to do in Plymouth that the kids will really enjoy. The National Marine Aquarium is the UK's largest aquarium and worth a visit or head to Dartmoor Zoo or Plymouth Pavillions for a spot of ice skating fun!
